  • Architecture of Erik Bryggman in Gdańsk: Lecture 24th May at 7 PM, exhibition 25th to 31st of May




  • The exhibition “Architecture of Erik Bryggman” is presented in Gdańsk in May. The exhibition is at the Polish Architects’ union space at the Court of order of St George, Strzelnica Św. Jerzego, Targ Węglowy 27 and is open 10 AM to 6 PM.

    On 24th May at 7 PM, the representative of the Bryggman institute, Mikko Laaksonen, will give a lecture on “Architecture of Erik Bryggman” at Instytut Kultury Miejskiej, Długi Targ 39/40.
    Both exhibition and the lecture are free of charge.

    Professor Jacek Dominiczak has arranged the visiting exhibition, which is a co-operation of  Bryggman Institute, Instytut Kultury Miejskiej, Gdańsk, Polish Architect’s union  Stowarzyszenie Architektów Polskich Gdańsk branch and Gdańsk Academy of Fine Arts. After the visit in Gdańsk, the exhibition is available for other visits in Poland.

  • Erik Bryggman 125 – year jubilee, events in May and June

    Erik Bryggman (1891-1955) is one of the most important architects of Finland. In 2016, we are celebrating his 125 – year anniversary. Here are some picks for those interested in his architecture.

     

    Bryggman restored the Turku castle (1946-1961) together with his daughter Carin Bryggman (1920-1993), an interior designer. Olli Kestilä finished the architectural solutions. In the castle, there is an impressive exhibiton on the restoration since 11th May, with all texts in English

    Until 14th May, there is also two trilingual Finnish – Swedish – English exhibitions. At Eerikinkatu 2, in Pop up Garden, one can learn how Erik Bryggman and Alvar Aalto introduced Functionalism to Finland with Turku Fair in 1929. At the Åbo Akademi library, Tuomiokirkonkatu 2, designed by Bryggman in 1934-1935 there is an exhibition of Bryggman's cards and letters from the library collections.

     

    During 13th and 14th May, several Bryggman sites are open. There are walking tours on Friday starting at 2 PM and 4 PM and on Saturday starting at noon and 2 PM from the square between Yliopistonkatu 27 and 29. The guided tour takes around 2 hours, the price is 10 euros or 5 euros for children, students, unemployed and pensioners. The guides can, by request, guide also in English.

    The Resurrection chapel, 1938-1941 is Bryggman's major work. In it, he fuses modernist main solution with influences from classicism as well as medieval churches. It led to final acceptance of modernism by the Finnish Evangelical-Lutheran chuch. The chapel at Hautausmaantie 21, is open on 13th and 14th May from 4PM to 5PM. Karoliina Vitikainen presents the chapel, by request also in English.

  • Internation Summer School of Architecture 2011 in Turku
  • The International Federation for Housing and Planning (IFHP) will arrange its next international summer school in Turku in August 2011. The Centre for Urban and Regional Studies (Aalto University/YTK) is preparing the course jointly with The City of Turku Planning Office and Bryggman Institute.

    Young architects, planners, and students from around the world meet to offer fresh viewpoints on a topic presented by the City of Turku. The course, which has lately met in Turku every other summer, has previously examined e.g. a pedestrian bridge over Aura River, and invisible places in the city.

  • Erik Bryggman 120 Years Seminar in February 2011 in the Resurrection Chapel
  • It will be 120 years since Erik Bryggman's birth in February, and 70 years in April 2011 since his Resurrection Chapel in Turku was completed . St Henry's parish and Bryggman Institute will jointly arrange a seminar (in Finnish) on the theme of 'holy space' on Bryggman's birthday, Monday February 7. The topic will be examined from the viewpoints of comparative religion studies, architecture, art history, and theology. The program also includes music.

    Before the seminar at 4.15 pm, flowers will be set on the Bryggman family grave in front of the Chapel. The seminar program begins at 4.30 pm and continues until 7.15. There is no entrance fee and no need to sign up in advance. Seminar language will be Finnish.

    The Resurrection Chapel is the internationally most noted work by Erik Bryggman, and one of the absolute masterworks of Finnish architecture in the 1930s and 1940s. Bryggman won the chapel design competition in 1938. Construction work started in the spring of 1939, was interrupted by the war (later known as the winter war), and then continued from the spring of 1940 to the following spring.

    Bryggman participated in fourteen architectural competitions for churches, chapels, and crematoria. He had plenty of success: four first and three second prizes, one third prize, and one purchase. Of the winning entries, only the Turku funeral chapel (later known as the Resurrection Chapel) and the Honkanummi pair of chapels in Vantaa were built.

    Without design competition, he received commissions for funeral chapels in Parainen, Lohja (Metsola Chapel) and in Lappeenranta (Ristikangas Chapel). Honkanummi, Metsola, and Ristikangas were completed after the architect's death. Bryggman never got to build a church – he did, however, design interiors and furnishings for some existing churches.
