Bryggman Institute |
The idea of the Institute was created in the preparation process of the Southwest Finland architectural policy program (2006). The Institute is also mentioned in the City of Turku architectural policy program (2009) and in the policy program of the Regional Council of Southwest Finland. In 2009 and 2010, the Regional Council has granted regional development funds for the founding of the Institute. The founding operation is coordinated by the Arts Council of Varsinais-Suomi (Southwest Finland). The Institute will begin independent operations in 2011. The name honors two eminent designers from Turku, architect Erik Bryggman (1891-1955) and his daughter, interior architect Carin Bryggman (1920-93). The Institute will be located in Turku. Bryggman Institute will become a national and international research and development center for architecture, built environment, and construction. It will be a creative contribution to learning in the Turku region. A Foundation will maintain the Institute. The Institute will collaborate with several fields of study at universities and colleges in Turku, focusing on fields involved with the built environment (urban geography, cultural history, art history, education, materials science, construction, building restoration). In addition, the Institute will form a tight research network with Finnish and international universities of technology. The Institute will become a significant organizer of further education in architecture, construction, and planning. It will also develop models for the architectural education of children, young people, and adults. The Institute will arrange events, seminars, and conferences related to architecture and construction. The annual Bryggman Day will become a popular event for friends of the built environment. The Institute will also follow up the realization of the local and regional architectural policy programs. |
